Boom Artist Tarli Glover talks iso and art making

Tarli Glover is well known at Boom for her beautiful, textured landscapes in pastel and acrylic paint. She depicts the vast countryside surrounding her home town of Ballarat. More recently, in times of isolation and restricted access to places far and wide, Tarli has been exploring her more immediate surroundings and documenting her findings. This new exploration moves away from semi-abstraction and demonstrates her skills and diversity as an established artist. Read on for Tarli’s words on this strange time.

My life in ISOLATION

Working on the masterplan for new work, spending many more uninterrupted hours in the studio sketching, thinking, deleting and experimenting.

Obsessively gathering ideas, images and technical information for a predominantly paper based series which will combine technical drawing with loose mono-prints, washes and collage. Quite separate from my current landscape practice, these pieces will be a little nod to the Victorian history that surrounds me in my home city of Ballarat. Basically, a big experiment I’ll be playing around with decorative narratives and concentrate on using the pattern and design of the cities historical iron work in a process of layering and repetition. Ill also be using the patinas of age and decay as inspiration in the creation of implied texture depth and character.

a screen grab of Tarli’s instagram page shows her process playing out during isolation.

ISO has provided the perfect opportunity to explore and experiment.

I’ve spent many hours during my’ allocated exercise time’ walking through the streets and cemeteries of town taking snaps of heritage lacework, balustrade panels and photographing the cast and wrought iron railings and fencing full of Fleur-di-Lis, Acanthus, iron wreaths of lily and grapevine, scrolls and spear tops.

experimenting.
