Exhibition: Madeleine Peters, Olivine

Madeleine Peters, Olivine
Exhibition Dates14th June - 15th July

Madeleine Peters' work concerns landscape, with her recent focus being the inland volcanic areas of South-Western Victoria. Her work navigates the relationship between place and memory, constructing environments by layering recollections, sketches and flashes of found imagery. These works evoke an unsettling, recognisable terrain but remain adrift from direct representation.

Olivine acknowledges landscape as an ever shifting space of material and cultural changes. The young volcanic ground of South-Western Victoria becomes a setting for Peters’ recollections to play out, assembling a strange and familiar dream.

The limitation of memory is observed in these works, natural exaggeration and disintegration of experience evident in each scene. The composition and atmosphere changes with each return to the canvas, building layers of conflicting memory and paint. The paintings in this exhibition were all formed from experiences on the traditional lands of the Gunditjmara and Girrai Wurrung peoples. The artist would like to acknowledge their Elders past, present and emerging.
