Rachel Hine / Make My Own People

Rachel Hine weaves figurative tapestry inspired by classical portraiture and a strong interest in fashion. Her colourful, and often textural pieces have expressive figures inhabiting a psychedelic landscape.

Using a combination of Medieval and Renaissance portraits and contemporary fashion, Rachel has emphasised the pensive and confronting gaze of the subject. The concept of ‘looking’ and engaging the viewer is an ever present investigation.

“Working intuitively, I often draw ‘girls in dresses’ as a way of gathering my thoughts and establishing identity. Instead of keeping these images hidden in private journals, I’ve decided to make them visible, and develope them as tapestries.”

Working from her Geelong studio, Rachel draws from over twenty years of experience as a tapestry weaver. Graduating from Monash, Fine Art with a Masters degree and several years experience at the Australian Tapestry Workshop, Rachel is enthusiastic about presenting contemporary tapestry.
